| Gathered and ready to board at Sioux Falls Joe Foss Field airport. |
May 13-
First day of our journey and we are wishing Happy Birthday to Dr. Daly! We left
Sioux Falls bright and early Monday morning.
I think the instructions were to meet at the SF airport at 3:30. Claire
led the way as the first to arrive; unfortunately, there was no prize for
her. The rest of 28 of SDSU’s finest
showed up with smiles, passports, backpacks and yawns ready to begin a great
adventure. Ellary wanted to make sure we
had breakfast and offered everyone homemade fish nuggets! Ellary and Sophie
logged 6,000 steps in the airport, so they were ready for a nap by the time we
set off to S. Korea.
After a
quick jaunt to Minneapolis where we spent a thrilling six hours, we started our
long trip to Incheon, South Korea. Many
slept, but some of us couldn’t catch a wink! Luckily, our flight out of Incheon
was delayed, so we easily made our flight even though we landed a bit
late. Who knew the Korea is Land of Calm
Sun? They had a beautiful, bright airport. From Korea it was another 4 hour
flight to Hanoi.
Finally,
we landed in Hanoi or Ha Noi. Ha Noi
means City in the River. Tony greeted us
with a smile- and patience as Karen had to run back into the airport to find
her backpack. Of course, that was just
an example to all to make sure you have all your items. Thankfully, the backpack was found without
too much difficulty. Hanoi has a full
moon tonight and we all stepped into the sticky night air with dreams of a
shower and a bed! (I don’t think that was just me.) As we drove to our hotel,
Tony pointed out the mural wall- miles long- created to celebrate Hanoi’s 1000
years as the capital of Vietnam. If we would have had time to study it in
detail, we would see that all 54 Vietnamese ethnic groups are represented.
Thanks for
joining us on our adventure. It’s now time for bed.
